Its or Its

Its or Its Why so confusing? Using its when you really meant its is a very common punctuation error, and it is easy to understand why it happens. The two forms sound identical. Not to worry, it is easy to eliminate this error from your writing if you ask yourself one simple question: Do I mean  it is or do I mean  something belongs to it? If it belongs, do not use an apostrophe it is not a contraction.   Its indicates possession.   Rules and Examples RULE: Use its when you mean it is, and use its when you mean belonging to it. INCORRECT:  Its  a trap.  CORRECT:  Its  a trap.    (Contraction) INCORRECT:  Its  really long.  CORRECT:  Its  really long.   (Contraction) CORRECT:  Its  really long tail was wagging back and forth.   (Possession) INCORRECT:  The tree is losing its leaves.  CORRECT:    The tree is losing  its  leaves.  (Possession) You can see how each of these easily-confused forms appears in the corpora on Lextutor below. It will give you an idea of the kinds of environments that people use each form most commonly.   CORPUS LINKS:  its,  its Its versus Its Practice Exercises Practice finding errors with its/its.Practice correcting errors with its/its. Are you using English Possessives Correctly (video and exercise)

Are you using English Possessives Correctly (video and exercise) English possessives are a bit different than they are in most other languages In our classes, we see even advanced students making mistakes with possessives, or using them in ways that are maybe technically correct, but sound strange to a native English speaker. For example, which of the sentences below is correct? My husbands uncle is coming to dinner. The uncle of my husband is coming to dinner.Watch the video for the correct answer, and to learn more about English possessives. Create possessive sentences from the words below. Write your answers in comments and we will respond.  Example: children/the/books/are/these These are the childrens books.1. company/computers/are/they/the2. friend/that/my/dog/is3. car/wife/where/my/is/?4. president/interesting/speech/the/was5. traffic/Los Angeles/bad/is6. 5 Practices To Deal With Stress and Anxiety

5 Practices To Deal With Stress and Anxiety Photo Credit: philly.com 1. Give Yourself 5 Minutes to Freak Out.  Let your stress and anxiety take the drivers seat for five minutes. Exaggerate them, make them worse, add more than you initially had, etc. Think of the worst case scenario and then send it into shark-infested waters in your mind. It may help to vent to a friend about your worries rather than just talking to yourself. Then, after exactly five minutes, take a step back. Mentally put all that craziness and chaos into a small box and seal it tight. Think of it as a package you got by mistake and imagine writing in permanent marker in all caps RETURN TO SENDER before picturing yourself dropping it off at a FedEx or UPS store and walking out. You know whats in that box, you dont want whats in that box, and youre getting rid of it. You are in control and youve sent all those stresses and anxieties away. 2. Get Some Exercise.  Yoga, jogging, biking, and other exercises all  release endorphins, which trigger happier feelings in your body and help energize you and give you a mental boost. So when you need to deal with stress or anxiety, taking a break to exercise will ultimately help you be more productive and positive as the chemicals released give you a runners high. Exercising will also help get you out of your own head and let you take a break from thinking for a while so you can focus on whatever activity youre doing. Photo Credit: goodrelaxation.com 3. Take a Minute to Breathe. When youre tense and stressed, you often hold your breath. Taking a minute to breathe and just focus on your breathing is a great practice to help you calm yourself and get your mind in a clearer and better place. Think only of your breath going in and out, and bring your mind and breath together in unity. If your mind starts to wander, dont let it. For one minute, focus only on your breathing and listen to yourself breathe. You are alive, you are vital, you are human, and you can do this. 4. Make Your Problems Smaller. When you think of everything you have to do or are worried about, they seem insurmountable and impossible. Think of your tasks and worries one at a time and try to conquer them one at a time, thereby making your overall stresses and anxiety-inducers smaller. It may also help to take a step back and get some perspective think about others in the world and their problems. This practice isnt meant to dismiss yours or belittle them, but rather make you think about your issues in the grand scheme of things and help you understand that they are things you can do and accomplish and arent impossible. 5. Relax. If youre having trouble dealing with your stress and anxieties, give yourself a break and take some time to relax. Whether you find it relaxing to sit and watch TV, to cook, to work out, to look at pictures of cute puppies, or something else, let yourself have some me-time. Your troubles and worries will still be waiting once your relaxation time is over but your mind will be in a better place to process and deal with your stress and anxiety and some time not thinking about your problems may help you see them in a new way. Life can be stressful but hopefully by using some of these practices you can reduce and deal with stress and anxiety when you feel them and better enjoy your time at school.

Why Your Kid Should Study Art and Music this Summer

Why Your Kid Should Study Art and Music this Summer Five reasons why your kid should study art and music this summer Fine arts are an important part of a childs overall education, but many students dont get a lot of exposure to art and music. The arts help encourage creativity, allow students to think outside the box, problem-solve, and relieve stress. Its not important whether a child has any innate talent in the arts but simply that they have the opportunity to participate in and appreciate everything they can learn in an art or music program. Students are busy with core academic subjects during the year making summer an excellent opportunity to enjoy all that the fine arts have to offer. 1. Creativity Participating in drawing, painting, sculpture, or music is an excellent way to encourage a childs creativity. Usually, every young child loves to draw pictures to share with friends and family, but they often dont have enough time to do this as they get older. Summer programs specifically geared towards the studio arts allow students the opportunity to be creative while developing artistic skills so they can take their drawings and paintings to the next level. 2. A well-balanced education Its essential for students to learn the core subjects to be successful as they work towards college and career but a well-balanced education will also include extracurricular activities such as exercise science, languages, humanities, and fine arts. Many middle and high school students are heavily focused on math and English during the school year but should take the opportunity to explore their interest in art or music over the summer. Artistic endeavors provide kids with an overall balanced education while allowing them to focus on academic subjects during the year (READ: Help Your Kids Learn to Love Reading this Summer). 3. A creative outlet Most students feel less stressed when they have a creative outlet as part of their routine. Students can listen to music, learn an instrument, learn to mix paint or visit a local art history museum. Whether a student is observing a piece of artwork by one of the Masters or creating a painting themselves, exposure to the arts will help provide them with a creative outlet so they can maintain a healthy work/life balance and lower stress when academic subjects start to become overwhelming. 4. Kinesthetic learning Most art programs are hands-on, allowing students to develop kinesthetic skills. When kids get to roll up their sleeves and fully participate in a learning experience, they’re more likely to become interested in the topic and enjoy the experience. Students can enhance their love of art by mixing their paint to create just the right color or tuning guitar strings to enhance acoustics. Additional ways to gain exposure to the arts include ceramics, drawing, dancing, and set design. Its essential for growing minds to have a hands-on experience as part of their overall education. 5. Art appreciation If students dont love drawing or painting their artwork, they may still enjoy being immersed in the creations of others. There are tons of opportunities for students to take in the arts with multiple senses and explore everything that creativity has to offer. They can visit local art museums and learn about relevant artists from history, attend a musical concert, learn about fashion or movie set design, or study the history of film. Art and creativity are a huge part of the environment in Southern California, so students are encouraged to soak it up and discover everything that fine arts have to offer. After School Activities 5 Tips to Help Your Child Socialize

After School Activities 5 Tips to Help Your Child Socialize After School Activities: Help Your Child Socialize With These 5 Tips Socialization is so important to the healthy development of a young child. However, most school districts have increasingly stringent goals that need to be met including test scores and general educational benchmarks. As a result, teachers are spending more time on core subjects and less time on socialization and structured play. As kids progress through elementary school, they will also be expected to spend more time on homework than the previous generations. The good news is that there are lots of fun and creative after school activities that encourage socialization at a young age. 1.   Time at the playground Taking a child to the park or playground seems like a simple after school activity, but its one of the most useful things students can do between the ages of K through 2nd grade. Each student will have had a different upbringing from birth to 5 and will come to kindergarten with a different set of social skills. Some kids will live in a neighborhood full of other children their age or have several siblings in the household. Other children may not have had as much of an opportunity to socialize or attend preschool as their counterparts. Time at the playground teaches children to learn how to share the equipment and get along with other children they dont already know in a semi-structured but supervised environment. 2. A non-competitive sports team Some sports leagues are highly competitive and are fantastic for students who want to refine their athletic skills or compete to win. Alternatively, there are several non-competitive sports teams that primarily develop social skills and general physical education. This second type of activity is great for kids who need more of an opportunity to socialize. The coaches and volunteers will keep the environment structured and make sure everything works out OK, but the kids have an opportunity to learn a skill while depending on each other for support. The focus isnt so much on winning but experiencing an organized form of socialization that is essential to a childs overall upbringing (READ: After School Activities: 5 Ways to Tear Your Kid Away From the TV). 3. Community service Volunteering isnt just for high school students who need to complete units to apply to college. Rather, community service activities are a fantastic way for younger kids to learn how to get along with their fellow human beings. Whether students are helping out at a bake sale that benefits their school or working with members of the community who need some extra TLC, volunteerism helps teach empathy and encourages youngsters to work together for the greater good. 4. Play dates Kids often ask to have play dates with their best friends at school or in the neighborhood. Its great to have time for close friends, but its also important for kids to get to know others their age who they havent met yet. Many communities have scheduled activities that any child can participate in on an official or unofficial basis. Whether a parent arranges for kids to spend a little bit of time with each other after school completing a craft, playing outside, or joining in on a community event, play dates are one of the most important yet simple ways young kids can learn how to socialize. 5. Arts and crafts Many community centers offer arts and craft classes with a hands-on approach. Although kids will take home their individual art projects, these types of after school activities allow for a higher level of socialization that isnt always allowed in the classroom. Children will have the opportunity to converse and collaborate in an environment where they get to give and take feedback on how to complete their creative endeavor. Teach Away Telegram - January 2013

Teach Away Telegram - January 2013 We hope all of our teachers have had a great start to 2013!In this month’s issue, we’ll address strategies for dealing with difficult students, as well as a list of essentials for your carry-on suitcase when moving overseas. Finally, our country spotlight for January is Saudi Arabia.Strategies for Dealing with Difficult StudentsEvery teacher knows the frustration of dealing with a tough student. Some kids act out because they have a difficult time learning, others might have outside emotional issues, and still others just have trouble sitting still! How you handle such students, however, can make a big difference in how you are able to manage your entire class. When faced with teaching a student who is often in trouble, try the following techniques in order to reach her and better control your classroom.1. Find out some of her interests â€"Does your trouble student love comic books? Soccer? Does she have a younger sibling she loves (or one who drives her crazy)? Find out something that’s important to her, especially if it’s something you might have in common.2. Talk to your fellow teachers â€" Do you have a colleague who has had success with this student? Ask him how he’s been able to reach the student. He might have some valuable insight into techniques you haven’t considered.3. Try peer help â€" If your student is strong in one subject, ask her to tutor a classmate who is struggling. Helping someone can be one of the best ways for a child to increase her self-esteem and take an interest in a subject.4. Stay close â€" When possible, stay in close proximity to your difficult student. Put her near the front of the class or spend a little extra time near her during group activities. It won’t address the root of the problem, but sometimes it’s enough just to keep an eye on things.5. Choose your battles â€" This isn’t to say that you should hold a problem student to a different standard than others. But at times it’s worth letting go of the littl e things in favor of working to resolve a larger behavior problem.6. Put yourself in her place â€" It can be hard, but ask yourself why this student is acting out. Does she feel inferior to her overachieving older brother? Is her family life difficult? At best, you might be able to understand an issue that’s bothering her. And at the very least, just reminding yourself to remain empathetic can help you keep your patience when it’s running thin!Traveling Abroad: What to Pack in a Carry-OnStarting a new job halfway around the world is already stressful. The last thing you want when you arrive is to find out that your luggage has been lost and you don’t know where to get anything. These days, there’s no reason to stuff a carry-on with entertainment options: most airlines show movies on international flights, and many travelers can use a single device for movies, music, and e-reading. Use your carry-on space for essentials:Passport and visa documentsDocumentation with your new a ddress and contact detailsMedication (be sure to check before you leave to be sure that your medication will not be a problem in your new country)Two pairs of underwear, two pairs of socks, and one thin change of clothesEyeglasses, if you aren’t wearing them on the planeToothbrush and travel-sized toothpasteCell phone or computer charger â€" however you plan to get in touch with family at home once you’ve arrivedSmall valuablesTake care to pack items that will not cause security issues at the airport, especially if you're not sure what items are forbidden in your new country.Country Spotlight: Saudi ArabiaWorking in Saudi Arabia gives expatriates the opportunity to make a living in one of the world’s wealthiest countries. Teachers in Saudi Arabia earn a lucrative, tax-free salary, and are generally provided accommodation and airfare in addition to their salary. Educators therefore find that they can usually save a lot during their employment. Expatriate communities thrive in S audi Arabia, ensuring that those living abroad can find a support network and familiar amenities.Saudi Arabia’s modern state is rooted in a rich and significant history. Known as the birthplace of the Islamic religion, Saudi Arabia contains the two holiest places in Islam: Mecca and Medina. Modern Saudi Arabia has undergone rapid development since the discovery of oil, which makes up70% of the country’s government revenue. Thanks to the oil industry, Saudi Arabia has grown into one of the richest countries in the world. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is perhaps best known in the West for its enforcement of strict societal rules. Islam governs daily life, and expats must understand and accept the country’s laws and customs if they expect to reside in Saudi Arabia. For culturally sensitive teachers, however, the cultural immersion of Saudi Arabia can be very rewarding. Friendly hospitality, family life, and close-knit relationships form the core of Saudi Arabian interactions. Though the rules are certainly different from what Westerners are used to, most teachers find that learning to accept new customs with an open mind is the best way to truly understand and appreciate Saudi Arabian culture.Teaching in Saudi Arabia can be a challenge, but for the right teachers, it is an extremely rewarding one. How to Make a Chemistry Reference Table

How to Make a Chemistry Reference TableIf you are considering a project in your school or college, a chemistry reference table can be a very valuable resource. This is a very effective way to create an introduction to the subject and make students understand the basic concepts of the subject.Your chemistry reference table will also help to provide a visual aid in explaining chemical reactions that can occur. There are several factors that should be considered when designing a chemistry reference table. You must consider the size of the student and the size of the room where you will be presenting the table. The first consideration you should make is the materials that you will need to make your chemistry reference table. If you are using traditional construction paper, be sure that it is acid free. You will need to have an acid free printer to print the table in order to make it safe for the student to use.You can buy technology displays that will allow you to display charts with rela tive heights on the screen. This will be useful if you are making more than one reference table for the same student. Another important thing to consider is what type of paper you will use to design the table.Tiff or offset printing is popular in the art and design world. You can get this kind of printer and you will be able to print pictures from photos and other sources. Many people have printers that have a digital camera that they can use to take pictures of subjects they want to include in their table. If you are planning to include a video, then you may want to look for a printer that has a DVD drive. You may also want to consider whether you will be printing the table on card stock or if you will need to print the table on graph paper. If you are using construction paper, it may be easier to transfer the information from the computer to the construction paper. If you are printing on graph paper, then you can transfer the information directly from the computer. Whatever type of printer you choose, you will need to be careful not to overheat the printer.Designing a chemistry reference table is not a difficult task. You can start with a general outline of what you would like to do, decide what you want to include, and then begin to make some notes as you plan the project. Remember that you will want to include both visual aids and material so that the students will understand the subject better.
